Why Your Guest Bathroom Smells Like Sewer (Fixes)

A sewer-like odor in a guest bathroom is almost always a plumbing or drainage issue. Because guests may notice it immediately, it’s worth treating the smell as a warning sign: even if the problem is small (like a dried-out trap), it can point to a pathway that allows sewer gas to escape into your home.

Below are the most common reasons a bathroom smells like sewer—and practical steps to identify the culprit.

1) A dry P-trap or floor drain

Every sink, tub, and many shower drains use a “P-trap” (or similar trap) filled with water. That water forms a barrier that keeps sewer gas from entering the room. If a bathroom is rarely used—or the drain hasn’t been run in a while—the trap can evaporate, leaving the barrier gone.

What to do: Run water in each drain (sink, shower, tub) for 30–60 seconds. If the smell fades, a dry trap was likely the cause. If the bathroom has a floor drain, pour water into it as well.

2) Toilet wax seal failure or poor connection

Toilets are sealed to the floor with a wax ring (or newer alternatives). If that seal loosens, cracks, or wears out, gases can leak from the toilet’s base area. Guests may describe the odor as “sewer gas,” and it can be noticeable even when you don’t see water leaks.

What to do: Check for discoloration around the toilet base, soft flooring, or dampness after flushing. If you find signs of a failing seal, the typical fix involves re-seating the toilet and replacing the wax ring.

3) Venting problems (toilets and drain stacks)

Plumbing vents help equalize pressure in drain lines so wastewater flows correctly. If a vent pipe is blocked, damaged, or improperly connected, air pressure changes can cause sewer gas to back up into drains—sometimes only in one bathroom or when other fixtures are used.

What to do: Look for obvious issues such as disconnected vent components under accessible areas or blockages near roof vents (when safe to inspect). If you suspect a venting issue and the smell persists, a licensed plumber can use diagnostic tools to locate the obstruction.

4) Sewer gas backing up from clogs or improper flow

Partially clogged lines can cause waste to move slowly and allow gases to travel upward or out through weak points. This can create a strong, persistent odor—often worse after you use the toilet or run water.

What to do: Notice patterns: does the odor increase after flushing, or does it appear even when nothing has been used? If plunging doesn’t help or drains are slow to empty, you may have a clog deeper in the system.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

If you want to narrow it down fast, try these steps in order:

  • Run every drain (sink, shower/tub, and any floor drain) and re-check the smell.
  • Inspect the toilet base for moisture, staining, or gaps.
  • Test after different uses (flush, then check sink/shower) to see where the odor originates.
  • Check for plumbing sounds (gurgling in sinks or toilets can indicate pressure/flow issues).

If the smell returns quickly after you’ve run water, the underlying cause is likely ongoing—such as a leak, venting failure, or recurring trap issue that needs a more durable fix.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed plumber if the odor persists despite running all drains, if you notice toilet base leaks, if you see slow drainage across multiple fixtures, or if you suspect a venting problem. These issues can sometimes require specialized inspection to confirm where gas is escaping and restore safe, proper flow.

For a guest bathroom, addressing the smell promptly improves comfort and helps prevent bigger plumbing complications later.
